Class Experience

Students will learn color mixing with simple forms and with monochromatic colors, complementary colors and secondary colors. The student will acquire knowledge of complimentary colors while adding forms on top of previous painted images, and super-imposing forms: such as trees in theses exercises. The student will also learn how to use a variety of paint brushes, as well as, different tools and media an artist uses to paint with.
This is a beginning class so no background knowledge is required. It is inspired by the creativity of what the colors do as we work.. We will do everything in class. There will always be a time to share what we are all painting! If a parent would like a progress report you can send me your e-mail and I can give you that. Thank you so much and hope to see you in class!

Class one: We will begin this painting by learning wet on wet methods of creating an abstract painting with specific colors. The student will create 3 background images using the wet on wet technique.
Supplies: Watercolor paper, brushes, dish sponge, watercolor paint, large tupperware jug for cleaning brushes and salt.

Class two: We will work with different amounts of water to color ratio and watch what the image can do by itself. The students will learn how to paint tree forms using the positive and negative space within the last pieces that they created. We will add complementary colors and learn about color choices within a composition.

Class three: A monochromatic scheme will be used to create 3 pieces . Playing with color and fun techniques is the main lesson. Simple forms using positive and negative space will be taught. Students will use the sponge to wipe out color from areas. They will learn to use different brushes for different techniques.

Class four: We will use the secondary colors to create 3-4 paintings that explore composition and how forms in space relate to one another. This is our last class in the series.

Supply List
Students will need watercolor paper of good quality. Canson or Strathmore are quality brands. Weight of the paper should be at least 140lb. Size is your choice but I wouldn't go smaller than 8x11". You can buy it in 30 page booklets at Wal-mart or on Amazon. Watercolor paint Red, Yellow and Blue. The student will also need a cheap packet of acrylic craft paintbrushes. They come in sets that have a range of sizes. Make sure there is one brush with a width 1 inch. Another supply we will use is wax crayon, rubbing alcohol and salt. I will update a list if we need anything else as the class progresses.

I have been teaching for about 20 years. I am a professional Artist and a teacher as well as a parent so I have had plenty of experience. I consider myself a natural teacher. I love kids and teaching. Watching children become inspired and seeing their excitement when they create an idea with their own hands is pure joy. It gives them the confidence and self-worth that everyone needs in this life we all live.
