This class is designed to introduce your child to the field of sports medicine by providing eight structured, self-paced topics for your child to learn. Sports medicine is an 'umbrella' term for a wealth of medical specialties that borrow from orthopedics, cardiology, emergency medicine, nursing, athletic training, physical therapy, and others. As such, students with an interest in the fields of medicine as well as fitness, health, exercise science, or kinesiology would be expected to gain valuable foundational knowledge from this course. Whereas this is an introductory class, there is no pre-requisite material required. However, students who have prior experience or a strong interest in anatomy or biology should be expected to do well in this course. To introduce your child to this exciting field of medicine, we will discuss a variety of topics across nearly 3 hours of lectures that are commonly encountered by sports medicine professionals including: • Sports Medicine organizations and professions • Basic injury terminology • Imaging and diagnostic procedures • Concussions and head injuries • Basic injury types • Heat illness • Weather extremes • Basic injury treatment Learning for this course will consist of your child watching a series of online lectures with narration provided by the course instructor. Advancing through the course will occur at your child's pace - he or she will advance to the subsequent lecture when they feel ready.
