Class Experience

Introduction to Spanish (Middle-School Trimester Course) Part III 

This 8-week class will continue introducing Spanish to young learners. This course will keep your learner engaged with eye-catching images, videos, and interactive activities. This course has been designed for students to learn the fundamentals of the Spanish language while also studying the gastronomy, geography, short history of several Spanish-speaking countries.

This class will be 40% vocabulary and grammar, and 60% guided practice.

Students will be expected to:
-Actively participate in class discussions and conversations
-Practice 1-2 hours a week outside the classroom
-Keep a Spanish notebook/diary.

*Taking my "Introduction to Spanish I and II" is not a requirement. However, the learner must have mastered the following subjects in order to be up to par when the class begins: the alphabet, the colors, the numbers 1-100, verbs: "vivir", gustar","ser", "tener", "tener que", verbs ending in "ar", "er", "ir", days of the week, masculino/femenino, months, seasons, expressing feelings, foods, describing clothes, people and locations. Comparatives, possessive, family members, asking questions using interrogatives. 

Structure:

-Icebreaker/greetings (5 mins)
-Teacher lecture/slides (15-20 mins)
-Guided practice (20-30 mins)

Week 1 (March 29 - April 2): 
-Review part 1 and 2
-Plural forms
-Express possession 
Grammar: "de" to show possession

Week 2 (April 5-9): 
-Parts of the body
Grammar: demonstrative adjectives.
Grammar: the verb "gustar"
Grammar: the verb "querer"

Week 3 (April 12-16): 
-Our favorite weekend activities
Grammar: past, present, future verbs
Grammar: the verb "estar" the verb "ir"
Grammar: the verb "poder"
Grammar: the verb "gustar"
Grammar: the verb "querer"

Week 4 (April 19-23):
-Numbers 200-1000 
-Review terms for clothes
-Talk about things we would like to buy
-Review numbers 1-100
Grammar: "verbo tener", expressions with "tener"
Grammar: stem-changing verbs: "e" to "ie"
Grammar: Direct object pronouns

Week 5 (April 26-30): 
-Legends and stories from Latinamerica and Spain
Grammar: Expressions of frequency
Grammar: Verbs in past and present

Week 6 (May 3-8):
-Household items and furniture
-Review ser vs estar
-Location words
-Review colors
Grammar: The Verb "vivir"

Week 7 (May 10-14): 
-Vamos de vacaciones
-Types of transportation
-Review verb "gustar"

Grammar: stem-changing verbs: prepositions of location

Week 8 (May 17-21): 
-Preparing and describing food
-Ordering food in a restaurant
Grammar: commands
Grammar: pronoun placement
Grammar: affirmative and negative words
Grammar: stem-changing verbs: prepositions of location

Week 9 (May 24-28): 
-Careers and professions 
-Comparative and superlatives
-Grammar: "Ojala", present subjunctive
-Grammar: "Por" and "para"

Week 10 (June 7-11): 
-Talking about yourself and others
-Describing your daily routine
-Making comparisons
-Final projects and presentations

** The 10th week of class, the final week of the first trimester, students will present a topic they have prepared in Spanish.

Learning Goals

At the end of this course students will:

-Be able to identify and describe themselves, others, public, and private spaces, and food.
-Be able to order food in a restaurant or shop in Spanish.
-Be able to use complete sentences in Spanish to write and speak.
-Be able to ask and answer simple questions in Spanish.
-Recognize past, present, and future verb forms
-Have learned about the culture of Spanish-speaking people from different countries around the world.
