**Class Details** This six week class for early readers and spellers uses an Orton-Gillingham approach based on the All About Spelling curriculum. Being able to spell words can help readers learn how to properly decode words as they read. Lessons will use PowerPoint slides displayed during Zoom meetings. Review of phonograms and key ideas will happen at the beginning of every lesson. During our lesson, students will have a chance to work on the skills being taught by manipulating letter...
Students will learn the first 26 phonograms, identify the first and last sound in a word, segment words with two and three sounds, distinguish between vowels and consonants, learn the short vowel sounds, choose the correct vowel for a word, exchange vowels to make new words, spell words containing short a, i, o, u, and e, learn how to capitalize names, understand what a syllable is, count syllables, and learn phonograms th, sh, and ch.
I have been trained in Orton-Gillingham and have used the Orton-Gillingham, Barton, All About Reading, and All About Spelling methods with struggling and non-struggling learners.
Additional practice is not required but highly encouraged. Frequent and short practice of skills is extremely beneficial. An optional Nearpod presentation will be provided in our classroom after each weekly lesson. This will give learners and opportunity to access extra practice.
*Pencil *Paper (you may use the provided paper or your own) *Letter tiles (print from resources provided) *Tracking sheets for adults (provided)
I highly encourage learners to sign up for my 1:1 pre-assessment one time class. This will provide baseline data for your learner. All students enrolled in this course will be assessed at the end of week six.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
After each lesson, learners will receive a link to Nearpod for additional practice. This link can be found in our Outschool classroom. Uploaded videos to YouTube are embedded within Nearpodand and will NOT direct your learner to YouTube.
I will be using strategies from Orton-Gillingham based multisensory programs. These include Orton-Gillingham, Barton, and All about Reading/Spelling. Optional Nearpod lessons are available for extra practice. Videos from YouTube are included in Nearpod lessons. Please see Parental Guidance for more information on this.
