includedClass Experience
This is an 5-week course introducing the fundamentals of music theory through games, activities, and discussions. As an instructor I use lessons inspired by Orff and Kodàly to capture the learners attention through song, dance, and art. Each week we focus on building new musical skills and we use songs to apply the new learned skill. By the end of this eight week course the learner will be able to apply all they learned through composing their own short musical song. The break down of the class is as followed: Week 1: A Steady Beat: "Weak vs. Strong", Meter: "2/4, 3/4, and 4/4" Week 2: Solfege: "My voice is my instrument", melodic direction: "Lines and spaces" Week 3: Note names and scales Week 4: Dynamics: "How to describe music" Week 5: Composition: "Putting it all together!" Each class is 55-minutes and is made up of a lecture, game, and interactive activity. Each week there will be worksheets uploaded to Outschool for each lesson. Each student will also be assigned a short homework assignment. We will review the homework together as a group at the beginning of each class. It is the goal that by the end of this 6-week course the student will have the abilities to compose their own short musical piece!
Learning Goals
Students will have a clear understanding of the basics of reading music and will be able to apply this new knowledge through group songs and short musical compositions.
