Course Overview: Introduction to Poetry: Crafting Your Voice and Vision What Will Be Taught? This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of poetry, focusing on crafting their own poetic voice, exploring various poetic forms, and refining their poems through revision. Students will gain an understanding of how personal emotion and sensory details can enhance their poetry. Topics Covered: Introduction to Poetry: Understanding poetry as a tool for self-expression and exploring examples of different styles. Crafting Your Poetic Voice: Finding and developing a unique poetic voice, using personal experiences and emotions. Exploring Poetry Forms: Learning about and experimenting with haiku, free verse, and sonnet forms. Revising and Refining Poems: Techniques for revising poetry to improve clarity, imagery, and impact. Reflection and Sharing: Reflecting on the writing process and sharing revised poems. Class Structure: This is a self-paced learning course where students progress at their own pace with no live meetings scheduled, but receive full teacher support through monitoring of submitted work. Lecture: Brief, engaging lectures with slides to introduce key concepts. Writing Exercises: Hands-on activities to apply what students learn. Examples: Analysis of selected poems to illustrate different styles and techniques. Revision Techniques: Practical tips and exercises for improving poetry. My courses blend creative expression with personal development. Whether we're diving into poetry to explore different perspectives or discussing psychological concepts to better understand ourselves and others, my classes are designed to engage the mind and the heart. I love creating a safe space where students can express themselves, learn new skills, and grow in confidence.
2) My professional background: I hold a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and General Business and am currently pursuing a second degree in Social Work. With over 10 years of experience in the social services sector, I have worked extensively with children and families, advocating for their well-being and providing support in challenging situations. I also have homeschooled my own children for the last 8 years. I’m a certified yoga instructor and have been a student of yoga for 15 years, which has greatly influenced my approach to teaching and living mindfully.
3) The values or philosophy behind my teaching: I believe that every student has a unique voice and the potential for growth. My teaching philosophy is rooted in empathy, creativity, and empowerment. I strive to create an inclusive and nurturing environment where students feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and emotions. By integrating mindfulness and self-reflection into my lessons, I help students build resilience and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
4) Something fun and personal! When I’m not teaching, you can find me taking nature walks, swimming, hanging out with my family and dog, Allie, or enjoying a good book. I love mushroom coffee, dad jokes, and polka dots!
