Your students will come out of this class saying, "Poetry is cool!" With a selection of both humorous and meaningful poems, we will talk about what makes a poem a poem, the different types of rhymes and the concept of rhyme scheme, alliteration, figurative language, and much more! This is a fun introduction for students who want to become familiar with the basics of poetry -- or who just want to spend an hour reading cool poetry! Some of the poets studied include Walt Whitman, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Edgar Allan Poe, Emily Dickinson, Carl Sandburg, ee cummings, and Rudyard Kipling.

My passions are writing and poetry, and it's my great joy that my five kids can quote Shakespeare and Longfellow. So many students claim to "hate" poetry, but that's often because poetry is difficult to understand. My goal is to give students the tools they need to unlock poems. Like John Keats suddenly understanding Homer once he read the English translation, I want my students to look "...at each other with a wild surmise/ Silent, upon a peak in Darien."
