In this session, students will learn about carbohydrate structure and function. Students will be introduced to the elements that make up carbohydrates and will draw and label the structures of monosaccharides and disaccharides. Putting the pieces together through condensation reactions, students will be introduced to polysaccharides. From here, we will introduce the breakdown and metabolism of sugars and complex carbohydrates by the body and how they are used as energy to fuel cellular respiration. Prior knowledge of atoms and elements is a plus but not necessary.
Learning Goals
Students should leave our class with drawn structures of monosaccharides, disaccharides, and polysaccharides and a working knowledge of these organic molecules as building blocks.
