Class Experience

The study of Ocean Animals is a big study unit. This will run for four weeks. Each week we will focus on a different topic of Ocean animals. Students through hands on investigation, books, crafts, games, food and discovery will enjoy learning about Ocean animals. Students will learn about the importance of suction to animals, such as squids, octopuses and sea urchins. They will learn why sea water is salty. (ocean water is different than fresh water, specifically with regard to salt content) and learn that skin alone will not help keep certain Ocean animals warm compared to blubber. Students will be able to recognize and identify a number of several common Ocean animals, learn about their typical diet, learn about their typical predators and learn about the various strategies they use to defend themselves against these predators. Students will also learn how to make ocean waves.
The first week we will do an overview of Ocean Animals habitat - An overview of the largest animal habitat – water! 97% of the water in our world is found in the oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, and Arctic Oceans. We will look at, and discuss why sea water is salty.
The second week we will look at the Oceans largest animals - Students will be introduced to the the largest ocean animals on earth. Students will learn about a Whale's weight, the size of a Whale's heart, where Whales spend most of their time in the Ocean and discuss how they need to breathe in air in order to stay alive. We will work on an experiment to show how whales keep themselves warm in cold weather.

The third week we will look at Ocean Crustaceans. Emphasis will be placed on observation of Octopuses and the use of their 8 powerful arms which are covered with suction cups to latch and grab on to things like rocks and food.

For the fourth week students will learn about Ocean waves and work on an experiment to demonstrate the waves in the Ocean. They will then create food art to depict certain Ocean animals.

I believe in the Montessori Method of education and hope to, in some small way, help to integrate this method teaching at Outschool.

My aim is to help children to autonomously and joyfully seek knowledge. This, I believe, will assist them to become confident, independent and happy beings, and have a lifelong love of learning.

I love gardening, the arts and traveling. I also love to sing and dance when no one is around.
