Class Experience

We will learn about basic nutrition science including what nutrients are: micro and macro nutrients.
Other topics we will explore:
Digestion - what happens inside our body when we eat?
Absorption - what does our body do with these nutrients?
Water - why is water so important and how much should we be drinking? Is there such thing as too much water?
Sugar - how does sugar affect our body?
Calories - what are they and how many calories do each of the nutrients provide?
Nutrition labels - do you know how to properly read a nutrition label? We will learn exactly how!
Other topics we will discuss: nutrition needs for kids - how many calories do we need and about how much of each macronutrient?
Health tips - nutrition is a huge part of health, but what else is?
Diets - there are so many diets out there. What are all of them? Why should we not restrict any one food group, unless necessary?
Compared to other nutrition classes, we will take our time with the science of nutrition and go a little deeper.
Students will be given the opportunity to share their knowledge, thoughts, and questions about any of these topics.
We will discuss foods we like to eat and students will be able to make better decisions on what to eat based on nutrient needs.
I will have a PowerPoint of the lesson (lecture style) and carefully go through each slide. I might start out by asking students what they already know about the topic. We will expand and I will check their understanding by asking questions and sometimes writing or drawing on my whiteboard to further explain.
Students do not need to have any prior knowledge of nutrition.

Learning Goals

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am currently a graduate student at Texas Woman’s University working on my Masters in Nutrition.

I teach fitness, yoga, and stretching classes on Outschool. I recently added a nutrition class too.

I am a certified yoga instructor. I have been teaching yoga at Texas Yoga Center since November 2021 in Houston.

I received a B.S. in Nutrition with a Dietetics Concentration in 2017 from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.

I have over two years of experience in teaching fitness, ballet, sports, cheer, and gymnastics to children ages 3-13. I taught with a company called Stretch-N-Grow Hill Country while in college and traveled to various schools around the area for these classes. I received a youth fitness standards certification for this job and also taught recitals and performances for many of these classes.

From May 2018 - October 2021, I taught online as an English teacher with VIPKid to children ages 4-14.

In total, I have over five years of experience teaching children.

I am extremely passionate about health and fitness. I was trained as a classical ballet dancer from the age of 4-17 years.

I briefly taught yoga before going off to college. I have also worked with certified personal trainers at gyms and have been active my entire life with dance, sports, gymnastics, and training at the gym.

Two other things I love: being outside in nature and traveling!

Everyone should be a lifelong learner, and I believe it is a teacher's responsibility to influence children to crave perpetual learning and to always ask questions. Learning should be exciting and interesting. I want my students to get enthusiastic and excited to learn! I will encourage them to teach others, as teaching is one of the best ways to learn!
Patience, encouragement, and scaffolding are things that I value and are extremely important in teaching.

I look forward to meeting your child and giving them the best possible online class experience!

Email me with questions at any time. Since everyone's schedule is a little different now, feel free to request days and times that work best for you and I will do my best to accommodate you.
