Students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of Music Theory and reading and writing basic sheet music through the comprehension of notational standards and how they are applied to performing instruments: Week 1 (Basics): -Clefs, Grand Staff, Reading and Writing Notes -Rhythm (Simple Meter): Rhythmic Values, Time Signatures, Dots and Ties, Grouping/Beaming Notes -Compound Meter, Rests Week 2 (Scales): -Intro to Scales, Key Signatures, Circle of Fifths -Major Scales, Intro to...
Students will be able to apply their knowledge to reading and writing sheet music and obtain a better understanding of melodic and harmonic structures.
Students should follow along with in-class readings and complete the quizzes on OpenLearn after class. If a student has an instrument, they should attempt to write their own music and play it (or have a performing family-member play it for them). Otherwise, students can use notation software such as https://flat.io/ or MuseScore and have it played back for them -- this will also help to solidify their knowledge. Students should spend an hour after each class applying their knowledge and doing the current module's quizzes.
(Optional) Manuscript Paper ($2.49): https://www.amazon.com/Standard-Wirebound-Manuscript-Paper-Green/dp/0881884995/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=sheet+music+notebook&qid=1591902299&sr=8-3
At the end of the course, students will receive a certificate of completion from OpenLearn which will act as their final capstone.
2 hours 45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
Note that in order to sign-up for this course, OpenLearn (and optionally Flat.io) requires users signing-up to be at least 13 years old or they will need parental consent to create an account.
