The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to music history from the twentieth century. We will discuss how the transition between the Romantic and the Twentieth-Century through musical forms, composers, musical works, and cultural history. The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. Upon completion, the following class would be 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐉𝐚𝐳𝐳 (Self-Paced). Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to help learners reflect on the material that they have learned. Students will interact with the instructor through the use Quizlet and play Kahoot! with the instructor and other learners of the course.
Learning Goals
Students will learn about significant twentieth-century composers and their representative works, developing skills to critically analyze how these pieces reflect broader historical and social contexts.

Introduction to Twentieth-Century Music
Learners will be introduced to the course and to twentieth-century music. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor.
Lesson 2:
Expanded Harmonica Resources: Debussy and Scriabin
Learners will be provided with expanded harmonic resources that will help them understand music by Debussy and Scriabin.
Lesson 3:
Beginnings of Jazz: Ragtime
Learners will learn about the beginnings of jazz and ragtime. An assignment will be provided by the instructor.
Lesson 4:
Second Viennese School
Learners will be introduced to the Second Viennese School and its importance. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor.

She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow.
