Introduction to Music History: The Renaissance Period
In this 10-week online music class, students will explore music from the Renaissance period on topics such as Ars Nova, Franco-Flemish composers, and secular vocal music from England, France, Spain, and Italy.

We will discuss how the transition between the Medieval to the Renaissance occurred through musical notation, polyphony modal theory, musical forms, composers, musical works, and cultural history. The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. Learning Goals
Students will gain an understanding of the key musical characteristics of the Renaissance period, focusing on genres such as secular vocal music and the innovations of Ars Nova.
Through written and analytical assignments, students will explore the contributions of Franco-Flemish composers to Renaissance music, examining their styles, techniques, and the impact they had on the development of music in Europe.

ARS NOVA: GUILLAUME DE MACHAUT, THE RENAISSANCE, AND MENSURAL NOTATION
In the first meeting, there will be a brief introduction to classroom expectations. The first topic that will be discussed is a continuation of the Ars Nova from Music History: Medieval. We will discuss the transition to the Renaissance period in music and the development of mensural notation. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor.

Learners will be introduced to Franco-Flemish composers, in particular, Guillaume Dufay. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor that will involve identifying different works by Dufay.

Learners will continue to develop their knowledge of Renaissance composers to include Busnois and Ockeghem. There will be an in-class discussion that will involve discussing the composition styles between Dufay, Busnois, and Ockeghem. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor.
