The following is a weekly schedule of what will be covered. Learners will be expected to keep a listening journal to record their thoughts on the pieces learned in class. Learning Goals
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of key musical forms from the Medieval period, including chants, early polyphony, and the ars nova, and their role in shaping Western music.
Through discussions on music in antiquity and the scriptorium, students will explore the historical and cultural contexts that influenced the creation and preservation of Medieval music.

There will be classroom introductions where students will answer the following question: What is Music History? There will also be an overview about Music in Antiquity: Music in Mesopotamia.

Lesson 2:
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐈𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐓𝐘: 𝐆𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐂𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄
Learners will be introduced to chant notation and theory: Neumes, Modes, and Hexachords. They will also learn about how Greece and Rome played an important role in the development of Western Music Theory.

Lesson 3:
𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐔𝐌: 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐔𝐒𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐏𝐓𝐒
Learners will be introduced to musical forms and historical information about Roman Liturgy and Chant: Offices and Mass; Genres and Forms of Chant. An assignment will be provided by the instructor of the course that will involve transcribing Greek notation.

Lesson 4:
𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐀𝐍 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐆𝐘 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐓: GENRES AND FORMS OF CHANT
Learners will be introduced to Medieval Secular Music: Troubadours and Trouvères, Cantigas and Estampies. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor where learners will develop their own codex.

Currently serves at the Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2024-2026) at Concordia University, Montréal, she is also recipient of the Fulbright and Portuguese Science & Technology awards. She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
