Introduction to Music History: Classical Period (Self-Paced)

In this 8-week self-paced class, students will explore Classical period music through pre-recorded lessons on topics like Early Classical Vocal Music, Sonata Form, Symphonies, Concertos, and composers like Mozart and Haydn.

Homework
1-2 hours per week. Homework will be assigned weekly to help learners apply the concepts through various exercises. Additionally, there will be recording assignments to further enhance their practice and understanding.
Certificate of Completion
Families may request a certificate of completion once the course has been successfully finished. This certificate serves as a formal acknowledgment of the learner’s participation and achievement, providing a tangible record of the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course.

Class Experience

This course will explore music from the Classical Period. Learners will learn about different musical styles, composers, works, music theory, performance practices, and cultural and intellectual history that was developed and prominent during this period of time. Learners will apply research through written assignments, as well as musical and theoretical skills gained in lower-division music systems and theory classes in analytical assignments. Upon completion, the following class would be 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: 𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝 (Self-paced).

Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also be able to create and play games like Kahoot!. The teacher will also post a question of the week in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their assignments in the form of a recording and upload them to the classroom, where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will also be different music applications used for the course.

Learning Goals

Students will develop a thorough understanding of key Classical period musical structures, such as binary and sonata form, through written and analytical assignments.
Students will analyze the works of prominent composers like Mozart and Haydn, gaining insights into early symphonies, concertos, and vocal music, and how these genres evolved during the Classical era.

Lesson 1:
𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐕𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐜: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐞𝐳𝐳𝐨
 Learners will continue to develop their knowledge about vocal music during the early classical period and the development of the intermezzo. There will be a listening assignment provided by the teacher. 
Lesson 2:
𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐬: Binary and Sonata Form
 Learners will be introduced to new instrumental forms that will include the binary and sonata forms. They will also listen to different examples that incorporate these forms. There will be an assignment that will be provided by the instructor. 
Lesson 3:
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜erto
 Learners will continue to develop their knowledge about classical instrumental music through the study of the early symphony and the classical concerto. There will be an assignment that will be provided by the instructor. 
Lesson 4:
𝐋𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟏𝟖𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐬: 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐳 𝐉𝐨𝐬eph Haydn
 Learners will learn about the music of Franz Joseph Haydn and his influences on the string quartet. There will be an assignment provided by the instructor.
