Introduction to Music History: Baroque Period (Self-Paced)

This course will explore the music from the Baroque Period. Learners will learn about different musical styles, composers, works, music theory, performance practices, and cultural and intellectual history that was developed and prominent during this period of time. Learners will apply research through written assignments, as well as musical and theoretical skills gained in lower-division music systems and theory classes in analytical assignments. The following is a weekly schedule of the different topics that will be discussed. There will be a short composition assignment where learners will provide a short melody that they will provide a basso continuo. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟑: 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐍𝐕𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀: 𝐋'𝐄𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐄 Learners will learn about how opera was invented and about the story of L'Euridice. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor along with a video presentation. They will also learn about the forms of the cantata and the motet. There will be a listening assignment provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟔: 𝐕𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐋 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐂: 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐓, 𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐎 Learners will continue learning about vocal music that will include the motet and oratorio. A listening assignment was provided by the instructor. There will be a short listening quiz where learners will be able to identify the differences between secular and sacred vocal music. A listening assignment will be provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟗: 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐄 𝐋𝐘𝐑𝐈𝐐𝐔𝐄 Learners will be introduced to the 'tragedie lyrique' and further develop their knowledge about French instrumental forms. There will be a listening quiz in class that will focus on Italian and French instrumental forms. A listening assignment will be provided by the instructor. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟒: 𝐆𝐄𝐎𝐑𝐆𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐄𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐂 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐋 & 𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐀 𝐒𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐄 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐎𝐐𝐔𝐄 𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐎 Learners will be introduced to the music for George Frederic Handel, the opera seria genre, and the development of the oratorio in the late Baroque. 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊 𝟏𝟓: 𝐅𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐋 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐉𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐒 Learners will present on a topic that we learned in class for their final presentations. There will also be a short debriefing to discuss whether they have achieved their goals being a part of this class. Assignments will be due two days prior to the scheduled meeting to allow the instructor to provide timely feedback to the learner via the Outschool classroom. The assignments are designed to help reinforce the topics learned in each session. While it is recommended to purchase the textbook, the teacher will provide all the materials needed for the learners in this class. This course will use video examples, assignment explanations, and will provide feedback. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will also complete melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation throughout the course. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will complete their ear training assignments in the form of a recording and uploaded them to the classroom where the instructor will provide feedback to the learner for their work. There will be melodic and rhythmic dictations where learners will be interacting with the instructor via video. There will also be different music applications used for the course that will encourage interaction between learners.
