In this 14-week series of online, pre-recorded video flex classes, students will explore classical music from listening to music from the period, and discussions on the lives, individual styles, and representative works of composers like Haydn, Mozart, Brahms, and Beethoven; all taught from a music appreciation curriculum from the Music & Language Learning Center by Kristine Dizon.

Music Appreciation is designed to help the student acquire informed listening skills which promote the development of curiosity about, and enthusiasm for, and the enjoyment of many types of music. This course provides an approach to perceptive listening and an introduction to musical elements, forms, and style periods. The discussion of composers’ lives, individual styles, and representative works aim not merely to impact facts, but stimulate curiosity and enthusiasm. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟏: Development of musical forms - Robert Schumann and Ralph Vaughan Williams 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟐: Edward Grieg and Zoltan Kodaly 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Video journal about the importance of classical music in culture. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟑: The New World by Antonin Dvorak 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏𝟒: Final Project Presentations For the final class, students will do a report about one of the composers discussed throughout the course in the form of a video project. This course will relate the music of an era to historical events and to the art and literature of the time period discussed. There will be video examples used, explanations of these periods, and their significance. Each lesson is a combination of lectures via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will be provided with a listening list of music representative of each period of time. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will do short reports about one composer for each musical period that will be in the form of a recording and uploaded to the classroom. Students will respond to each video discussing what they learned from each other.

She is an internationally known linguist, teacher, and professional musician who has taught on four continents. Her passion for service stemmed from her work as an AmeriCorps Vista Fellow. In her spare time, she likes to play with her pet rabbit, Señor Blanco.
