Class Experience

Music Appreciation is designed to help the student acquire informed listening skills that promote the development of curiosity about, an enthusiasm for, and the enjoyment of many types of music. This course provides an approach to perceptive listening and an introduction to musical elements, forms, and style periods. The discussion of composers’ lives, individual styles, and representative works aim not merely to impact facts, but to stimulate curiosity and enthusiasm. Upon completion, the following class would be Introduction to Music History: Baroque Period (Self-paced).

The course offers course material from the Baroque period. In the extended version, we will focus on the following musical topics.

𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟏: Renaissance
𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟐: Baroque
𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟑: Classical
𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟒: Romantic
𝐒𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝟓: Modern Music

This course will relate the music of an era to historical events and to the art and literature of the time period discussed. There will be video examples used, explanations of these periods, and their significance. Each lesson is a combination of lecture via PowerPoint, listening, and written discussion about the material covered in the lesson. Students will be provided with a listening list of music representative of each period of time. The teacher will post questions in the classroom to encourage class discussion that will reflect the material that they have learned. Students will do short reports about one composer for each musical period that will be in the form of a recording and uploaded to the classroom. Students will respond to each video discussing what they learned from each other.

Learning Goals

Students will learn to identify and describe key musical elements (such as melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, and form) through active and perceptive listening, enabling them to engage more deeply with a wide variety of musical genres and styles.
