Class Experience

Is your child getting ready to start multiplication? This flexible schedule class allows them to learn about what multiplication is and how it relates to addition. This class is asynchronous, which means that there are no live classes. Instruction is provided through video instruction, and activity pages to complete after the video lessons.
This class is designed to help students understand WHAT multiplication is and how it works. This class is not about memorizing the times' tables, but knowing what multiplication is. Worksheets and activity pages will be posted in the classroom at the start of each week. These pages are designed to be completed after watching the videos.
Prior to starting this class students should have a strong understanding of addition facts, and be able to skip count.
Week one will cover how multiplication is many times of the same group. Students will practice drawing, or making, different illustrations or pictures showing the different problems prompted in the classroom.
Week two will work on matching multiplication problems to their illustrated pictures.
Week three will work on turning addition problems into corresponding multiplication problems.
Week four will work on multiplication on a number line, and organized as arrays.
The last week we will work on connecting all of the different topics.
In the classroom, every week will have different questions, and themed activities based on the topic of the week. Activities in the classroom may include: students using their toys, and household objects, to show different multiplication concepts such as "many times of the same group", repeated addition, multiplication on a number line (making a number line, rolling dice, and jumping that out). Questions and activities will be posted in the classroom to create interaction between the different students and the teacher. Students post their photos and/or video responses to the questions and activites in the classroom. Students are encouraged to provide positive and encouraging feedback to their classmates.
