Students will experience a three week introductory course on marine science through a wholistic approach. Students will learn about the content through history, science, culinary, art, and mathematics in a variety of hands-on projects. Each week the lesson will be divided into a "teaching" portion and an activity/project based portion. Week 1: Students will learn: What is marine science? What does the marine environment look like? How did scientists learn about the sea? Why is the ocean important? During this lesson, students will take a virtual field trip on the HMS Challenger to see what is was like to be a scientist on exploration. The project portion will be creating a model using cuilnary expertise to make a cookie earth. Week 2: Students will learn about the continents, water, and features of the seafloor in relation to marine science. Students will learn about the properties and molecular structure of water and the importance it has on Earth. During this lesson, students will create a model of the molecular structure of water. Week 3: Students will learn about water density and how salinity affects its density. Students will learn about the minerals the are found in sea water and how water moves. They will also learn why the ocean is blue. During the lesson, students will conduct a density experiment to discover if fresh or salt water is denser.

My name is Melissa Smith , and I am proud to be a Parkway Early Childhood Panda!! I am from St. Louis, received a Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Dayton, and my Masters in Education from Missouri Baptist University. I am certified to teach Early Childhood, Early Childhood Special Education, and Elementary Education. This will be my seventh year at Parkway Early Childhood after four years at Kirkwood Early Childhood Center in Early Childhood Special Education.
I have a true passion for working with our youngest learners!! Helping each child progress in all areas of their development—academic, social, language, and motor—is a challenge that I am honored to accept daily. I strive to create a community of learners that nurtures this growth in a positive, fun environment.
Personally, I have been married for 21 glorious years and have three fantastic children who are 20,17, and 14 years old and attend Parkway Schools and Mizzou. We love to watch our kids' sports—tennis, volleyball, basketball, baseball, and swim! I also enjoy reading, cooking, music, relaxing at the beach, and spending time with friends and family.
