Class Experience
This class is an introduction to my 8-week typing course, but can be very useful as a stand-alone class to begin mastering the keyboard. This class uses interactive slides (through nearpod.com) to learn basic typing skills. We will start by learning which fingers type on which keys (see color-coded chart upon enrollment). We will then learn the function of the following keys: caps lock, shift, space, enter/return, and backspace. We will go over the importance of pacing (using a metronome...
Students will learn which fingers should strike which letter keys. Students will learn basic functions of non-letter keys on the keyboard. Students will learn and type the most commonly typed words, among other words. Students will practice typing letters and words to begin the memorization process of the location of the letter keys. Students will learn timing and good typing habits. Students will be told what they can do moving beyond the class to build speed and accuracy on their own.
My one-minute speed test result is 73 words per minute and I have had many jobs which require a lot of typing. I took a one-semester typing class in high school which I took very seriously (I learned on an old-school typewriter lol). My mom went to secretarial school in the 60's and she types 90 words per minute! After I developed my 8-week keyboarding course she went through it and gave me some great advice on changes I could make to really embed these skills into learners minds for life, and many of those strategies and skills have been applied to this intro course!
There is no homework for this class, however, after the class I will post in the classroom some links to online typing games that learners can continue to play to increase their speed.
1 file available upon enrollmentpdf keyboarding chart (will be supplied upon enrollment, please print out before class) laptop or PC with keyboard (tablets will not work with this course unless there is a keyboard attached)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
I will be monitoring each student’s letter and word drills in real-time. We will do a mini quiz/contest to see if students understand the function of certain keys. Students will share with me their typing game scores (optional).
55 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Please monitor your learner during this class to make sure they are using their keyboard chart and keeping up with the drills!
We will use interactive slides on nearpod.com to learn material. We will also use two websites which offer typing games: typing.com and freetypinggame.net.
