This class presents the material through a variety of means. Teacher Kayla Stierwalt shares the breakdown of the inverted pyramid paragraph style used in journalism and provides examples. Students then have opportunities to write their own paragraphs through guided practice. Learners get to do exercises on their own and in pairs. Each session students get to look at real examples of the inverted pyramid paragraph and create their own. Topics include event announcements and follow ups, breaking news, beat reports, and features. For each type, students focus on how to gather the information and how to best present it through the inverted pyramid paragraph style. The class topics use the following breakdown: Week 1: Events Students explore and example event to do a write up about it before and after. Week 2: News Students find newsworthy information, comb it for useful facts and share the details in the inverted pyramid paragraph style. Week 3: Beats Students explore what areas might be covered in beat reporting and practice updates. Week 4: Features Students explore a topic to generate a feature article.
