Description
Class Experience
Students will be able to identify the body systems, including major organs for the body systems and be able to explain these systems to someone else. Students will be able to demonstrate and explain the reason behind the proper procedure for hand washing when at home and when in a public place. Students will be able to describe healthy eating habits and ways to increase wellness.
I have a Bachelor's degree in a medical field where I practiced Respiratory Therapy, taught classes to college students, and became a middle manager for my department. I then obtained a teaching certificate for middle school science. I am a licensed public school teacher. I also have a Master of Arts degree in teaching and have specialized training from my master's degree to teach middle school science, which would incorporate the age/grade levels for which this class is dedicated to. I have taken and passed the Praxis exam (standard competency exam) for Middle school science as well as the one for Health K-12. I have also taught middle school health and life science (anatomical systems would be covered in this) professionally for six years.
Students may choose to do additional research on the topics; handouts will be provided to students to do during classes as well as become a reference for further investigations. Students will need to read independently on their own; however, no in-class reading is required. Students should be able to research with supervision between classes if desired. Students are also encouraged to sketch the topics between classes. They can volunteer to show their sketches to their peers if desired.
A handout will be provided each week. I suggest a clipboard or a folder or both and a pencil with some paper - either blank or lined - to take any additional notes. Colored pencils after class. On week 4 each child will need at least one nutrition label to look at during our discussion. On week six the student would watch me do a handwashing lab and can take notes on this if desired.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The student will have a set of original handouts/worksheets that will become a collection of information they can utilize to study as 'experts'. I will issue a certificate when the student has completed the course.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will discuss anatomy, blood, and body parts (but nothing reproductive in nature). We will focus on the body systems listed in the description.
