Introduction to Greek Myths for Ages 7-9
Class experience
We will look at 3 Greek myths (Heracles, Dionysus and the Pirates, and Medusa) and explore them through stories, art and creative writing. The class will be a combination of story-telling, looking at art images and sharing our own creations (drawing and/or writings) on screen. Part of the lesson will be teacher led, but there will also be plenty of opportunity to talk about the myths and for students to share their creations if they choose to do so. By the end of the session, the students...
Students will become familiar with Greek myths and their endurance in modern art. Students will gain the confidence the venture their own interpretations of the myths and they will have a chance to showcase their art or views.
I have a degree in Classics and I am a qualified teacher. I have been teaching about the Greeks and Romans to students of all ages and backgrounds for more than 15 years. Please do not hesistate to get in touch if you have any questions about the potentially sensitive topics that we will cover.
It would be great if students have paper and pen, as well some other medium to create a fast artwork (colouring pencils or play dough, for example). During the session, there will be some time for students to either write a creative piece of writing or draw their own version of one of the myths.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The myths are over 2000 years old, and they portray violence, sexist attitudes and a very different world view. However, the approach to them will be from a 21st century perspective. Some of the images may include nudity (e. g. in ancient statues or vases).
