Beginner Level
Students love creating their own music, but the skills needed to compose from scratch take years to develop. However, the Garageband app makes it easy to sound like a pro even if you do not know how to play an instrument! Over my years as a technology teacher, using GarageBand has been one of my students' favorite activities and I love helping students learn the secrets to using it effectively to make awesome music! Please note: This is NOT a live instruction class. All instruction in this self-paced class will be done in the Outschool online classroom using informational posts, pre-recorded video tutorials, and online discussion. This class is perfect for students who would like to work independently at their own pace on projects or who are in a different time zone than the instructor. In this 4-week online self-paced Class, students will learn how to create digital music on their iPad (or iPhone) using the free Apple GarageBand app. This class is geared towards students who have never used GarageBand before or who have some experience with GarageBand and would like to improve their skills and learn new tricks to create music. By the end of this class, students will be able to create songs using a variety of GarageBand instruments that will make them sound like a rock star! Skills will build with each lesson so that by the end of the class students will have a good grasp of many ways to use GarageBand to create incredible music. For each lesson, a different project will be taught through video tutorials featuring a GarageBand instrument/tool. Students will also have the opportunity to have online discussions about the skills being learned, ask questions, and share their projects for teacher feedback. I always enjoy seeing the creative things that my students make! An optional enrichment project is included for each lesson. OVERVIEW: Lesson 1 - LIVE LOOPS Lesson 2 - DRUMS AND BEATS Lesson 3 - GUITARS AND SMART INSTRUMENTS Lesson 4 - AUDIO RECORDER Class Requirements: *An iPad with the most recent version of the free GarageBand app downloaded in advance. (An iPhone or iPod also works, but some features may look slightly different): https://apps.apple.com/bb/app/garageband/id408709785 *A separate computer or screen (not the iPad they are using for their GarageBand) to watch the video lesson in the Outschool classroom while they work on their iPad. *Headphones, earbuds, or airpods are helpful when recording vocals. PLEASE NOTE: *You will need the most recent version of GarageBand. Older iPads might not be able to download GarageBand and might not have the Live Loops feature available in the app. Your GarageBand screen might look different from the teacher's version if you are not up to date. *GarageBand on a Mac Computer or laptop will NOT work for this class. The interface is totally different from that on iOS devices. I have a separate class that covers GarageBand on the Mac Computer - please reach out if interested. *This class will be demonstrated using an iPad (which is probably the easiest device to use for this class). If students use an iPhone or iPod, the interface might look slightly different. ,
Learning Goals
