Class experience

This class is taught in English.
By the end of this one-session introductory course, students will:

Gain a foundational understanding of the Roblox platform and Roblox Studio, including its interface and navigation.
Learn the basics of game design in Roblox Studio by creating, styling, and placing parts to design a game environment.

Understand and apply part properties, such as color, material, size, transparency, reflectance, and collisions, to enhance their game design.

Get introduced to Lua programming for beginners, and learn how to use Lua scripts to interact with game elements in Roblox Studio.

Explore the importance of anchoring parts to prevent them from falling or moving, and gain familiarity with other part properties to improve their game's stability and appearance.

Additionally, students will receive a complete study guide for the lesson, allowing them to review the material and practice at home, further solidifying their understanding of game design, Roblox Studio, and Lua programming.

This course aims to provide students with a solid foundation in game design, Roblox Studio, and Lua programming for beginners, equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to progress in their game development journey.
Experienced software developer with 18 months experience teaching experience (python to 7 to 16 year olds)
Homework Offered
For this one-session introductory course, students will receive a comprehensive study guide as homework, which includes a complete recap of the lesson, along with detailed examples and full code. This study guide is designed to help students reinforce their understanding of game design, Roblox Studio, and Lua programming concepts covered in class, and to encourage them to continue exploring and practicing in their free time. The homework is expected to take approximately 1-2 hours for students to review and practice. As this is an individual assignment, learners will be working independently, following the step-by-step instructions and examples provided in the study guide. The study guide will cover: A recap of Roblox Studio navigation and interface A review of game design principles in Roblox Studio, including creating, styling, and placing parts A summary of part properties and their applications, such as color, material, size, transparency, reflectance, and collisions A refresher on Lua programming basics, with examples of Lua scripts to interact with game elements An overview of anchoring parts and other part properties to improve the game's stability and appearance By completing the optional homework, students will have the opportunity to further develop their skills in game design, Roblox Studio, and Lua programming, laying a solid foundation for their future game development journey.

Grades Offered
Here is a list of things you will need for this class:

A computer: Ensure you have a computer with the necessary system requirements to run Roblox and Roblox Studio smoothly. The system should have at least a 1.6 GHz processor, 1 GB of system memory (RAM), and DirectX 9 compatible GPU. For a better experience, a more powerful computer with a faster processor, more RAM, and a dedicated graphics card is recommended.

Roblox account: Sign up for a free Roblox account if you haven't already. This account will allow you to access and use Roblox Studio and save your work on the platform.

Roblox Studio: Download and install Roblox Studio on your computer. It is a free development tool provided by Roblox, which you will use to create and design your games throughout the class.

Internet access: A stable internet connection is necessary for downloading Roblox Studio, accessing the platform, and working on your projects during the class.

Optional: A mouse and keyboard are recommended for ease of navigation and better control while working in Roblox Studio.

By having these items ready, you will be well-prepared to participate in the class and start your journey into game design and development with Roblox Studio.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Roblox Studio is a powerful, creative tool that allows students to learn game design, coding, and collaboration skills while building their own unique experiences in a safe, moderated environment. Students need a Roblox account to access Roblox Studio, but we will only be using Roblox Studio in this class, focusing on game creation rather than playing games created by others. Creating a Roblox account is free, and as a parent, you can monitor your child's account settings, including privacy and security options, ensuring a safe and engaging learning experience.
