Class Experience

Hello! Bonjour! I am so excited to have you here. In this Introductory French FLEX course (no live meetings) students will learn French basics including how to introduce yourself, describing yourself, commonly used verbs and how to conjugate them, and numerous and useful vocabulary. This class is intended to be an introductory course for beginners, therefore English will be used occasionally to achieve maximum comprehension. No prior knowledge of French is required.

This course is a great option for those that want to learn French but are unable to commit to a weekly live meeting. New class material will be available at the start of each week for the student to complete. There will be a recorded lesson and activities for students to learn and practice. Though there is not a live meeting, there is still ample opportunity for students to interact with one another through the weekly activities, which may include discussion threads or Flipgrid activities. Including instruction and activities/assignments, I estimate the student to spend 2-3 hours each week on the course. I believe in quality over quantity!

If you are interested in this course WITH a live meeting, please view my alternative, live meeting semester class here: https://outschool.com/classes/introduction-to-french-beginner-1-course-xKhuyLJj?usid=G99eyOD4&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link

A majority of the work for this course will be completed in the online classroom or though materials provided by the teacher. However, the course may also utilize Quizlet, Nearpod, Flipgrid, or Padlet for lessons and discussions if I find these resources can provide a better learner experience. Please note: the student will not need to pay for any of these services.

I believe in contextualizing the grammar and vocabulary that students learn and find this is the best way to learn a new language. Therefore, students will learn vocabulary that corresponds with the new grammar techniques in order to get into a habit of putting these skills together to form complete thoughts and sentences.

This course is intended for student scaffolding, meaning concepts will build on each other over the course of the class. Each week, a new vocabulary set will be introduced to students that will pertain to the course topic for that week. It is important for students to practice their vocabulary words both in and outside of class. Please see below for a course schedule with basic details of weekly lessons.

For those who have not taken a language course before, I highly encourage taking my "Best Practices for Learning a New Language" one time course prior to the start of class. You can find the course listed here:

Hi! My name is Erica and I have a passion for language, culture, and community!

I have obtained a Bachelor of Arts in French and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a concentration in Finance, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition, I have obtained my Certification in Business Language; French, TEFL Certification, and a TESOL Certification. I also spent considerable time studying at the Jean Moulin Université in Lyon, France.

I began learning French at the age of 13 and have continued to practice and study the language and culture ever since. Because I began learning a second language at a young age, I have an understanding of how young learners process and develop a foreign language.

After living in France for an extended period and traveling repeatedly throughout Europe, I have developed an affinity for the culture. I have taken extensive coursework in European history and culture, as well as other francophone countries that are not located in Europe. My travels continuously take me back to these regions. Therefore, I am happy to offer additional courses in these subject areas, as well as integrate this knowledge into my French courses.

I have vast experience working with children both online and in person through teaching and tutoring French and teaching English as a Second Language(ESL). I have also worked with children as a dance teacher and gymnastics coach. I have been with children in all stages of life and understand the complexity of their developmental and educational needs.

Sharing my passion for language and culture and seeing my students learn and grow is the greatest blessing. I believe that we learn best when we have fun and interact with one another in a kind and compassionate manner. While lectures are occasionally necessary, I encourage interaction and student output throughout my classes. I strive to make my classroom environment a friendly and inviting space for students to feel comfortable and happy to be learning. My coursework typically involves work that is intended to be enjoyable and fun for the learners, all while gaining new knowledge.

I am so excited for the opportunity to work with your student!
