Introduction to French: Beginner 1 Course (Ages 13-18)

Hello! Bonjour! I am so excited to have you here. In this Introductory French course students will learn French basics including how to introduce yourself, describing yourself, commonly used verbs and how to conjugate them, and numerous and useful vocabulary. This class is intended to be an introductory course for beginners, therefore English will be used frequently to achieve maximum comprehension. Please note: This is not a French immersion course. 

During our live meeting, there will be a mix of lecture and activities for students to learn and practice. Practice and repetition is the best way to learn a language. Therefore, it is very important for students to complete the outside work after our lesson. Most outside work for the class can be completed in 1-2 hours. I believe in quality over quantity! 

A majority of the work for this course will be completed in the online classroom or though materials provided by the teacher. However, the course may also utilize Quizlet, Nearpod, Flipgrid, Padlet, or Kahoot for lessons and discussions if I find these resources can provide a better learner experience. Please note: the student will not need to pay for any of these services. 

I believe in contextualizing the grammar and vocabulary that students learn and find this is the best way to learn a new language. Therefore, students will learn vocabulary that corresponds with the new grammar techniques in order to get into a habit of putting these skills together to form complete thoughts and sentences. 

This course is intended for student scaffolding, meaning concepts will build on each other over the course of the class. Each week, a new vocabulary set will be introduced to students that will pertain to the course topic for that week. It is important for students to practice their vocabulary words both in and outside of class. Please see below for a course schedule with basic details of weekly lessons.

Week 1:  Course Introduction - Students will be introduced to the topics we will be learning in this course. We will review class expectations at this time. Students will learn to introduce themselves and say basic greetings.

Week 2: “Aimer” - Students will learn the verb “Aimer” (to like) and how to use it in a sentence. Students will be introduced to conjugating verbs in the present tense.

Week 3: “Faire” and “Jouer” - Students will learn and practice the verbs “Faire” (to do) and “Jouer” (to play) and how to conjugate these verbs. Students will learn how to use these verbs in a sentence with the verb “Aimer” to discuss what activities they like to do.

Week 4: Futur Proche(Near future) - Students will learn how to tell time, days of the week, and months. Students will learn the verb “Aller” (to go) and how to use it in the Futur Proche tense to talk about their future plans. 

Week 5: Mid-Class Review: We will review any concepts students need to practice more before moving onto the second half of the course. This will be customized to each course section and what the teacher feels is needed.

Week 6: Avoir and Être: Students will learn the verbs “Avoir” (to have) and Être (to be) and how to conjugate these irregular verbs. Students will practice using these verbs for describing people, places, and things. 

Week 7: Avoir and Être: We will continue to review the verbs “Avoir” and “Être”. Students will have a clear understanding of when to use each verb. 

Week 8: Culture: Students will learn about the school system in France. Students will combine what they have learned in our previous classes to discuss their school day, what courses they like or dislike, and what activities they do at school.

Week 9: End of Class Review: For our last day of class, students will review the concepts and vocabulary that they have learned throughout the course.
