This class is a combination of two of my successful fractions classes, "More Than Pie: An Introduction to Fractions", and "Naming, Comparing, and Ordering Fractions with Cooking, Sports, and Cars". Day 1: Students will be introduced to fractions and take interactive notes. We will then go through examples of having "part of a whole". Students love when we throw puff balls into a muffin pan to make fractions! Day 2: We will review parts of a fraction and then play Fraction Bingo and other games for practice. Day 3: Students will practice naming fractions (ex: four-fifths... etc.). They will then look at various examples for how fractions are ordered from least to greatest. We will look at how fractions differ in amount by pouring ingredients of different amount onto paper. Sorry for the mess, parents! Day 4: Students will share their discoveries from their homework. We will then compare fractions using mechanic's wrenches and other examples.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of basic fraction skills by writing, naming, comparing, and ordering fractions.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am offering this class because, through my years of teaching math to students with learning disabilities as well as typically developing students, I have found fractions are a difficult concept. Students require more than to just look at picutres of colored in pies to understand why for example 1/2 is larger than 1/4. By seeing and manipulating the fractions themselves, they will be able to learn and retain the information more easily.
