Introduction to Fashion Design: Create Your Own Fashion Collection!

Parsons trained NYC Designer & Entrepreneur -CEO & Creative Director of CURVYKINI (www.curvykini.com) offers Intro to Fashion Design workshops! This series workshops will focus on finding inspiration, creating a mood board & developing a Mini-Collection. You will learn how to develop your own concept and intended audience for a fashion mini-collection, which you will then illustrate on sample croquis. A great introductory class for students who wish to explore the basics of Fashion Design. In this introductory course, you will learn how to mix-and-match garments, fabrics, texures and colors to develop a variety of outfits using a limited number of pieces. Once you've developed and edited your final line, you will present your collection, idea, and inspiration to the class. At the end of this course, you can expect to have the basic skills to create a fashion collection that is all your own! You will learn how to start with inspiration and turn it into a complete fashion collection that can be used to create collections across all popular categories, including: swimwear, childrenswear. womenswear, sleepwear, activewear, etc.

Class Experience

Introduction to Fashion Design

Students learn fundamental fashion industry concepts &  techniques as they learn the basic skills to develop their own fashion collection. Learners will be taught the basics of designing a clothing collection, from inspiration, to mood boards to creating a final collection. *Class style is conversational, collaborative and presentation based.*

Required for physical rendering of collection:
Fine Tip Black Drawing Pens for outlining 
Pencils
Color Pencils or Markers (including flesh tones)
Printer/paper- To Print out class materials & croquis

Required If doing a physical mood board:
Scissors
Glue Stick
Current Fashion + Lifestyle Magazines (min 3)
Posterboard or Heavy Card Stock (8X10 or 11x17 recommended sizes)

* if student wishes to do mood board and collection 100% digital, then physical art supplies are not required*

Optional Digital art programs:
Photoshop, sketchbook, procreate, Canva


Week 1:

* Introductions
* Discussion: Finding Inspiration
* Discussion: Creating Mood Board Instruction
* Q&A

Homework: 1. Read Course Outline & All Handouts including "Mood Board Guidance".  2. Review all sample mood boards in course materials. 3. Complete Mood Board and prepare to present to the class. (3 minute minimum presentation)

Week 2:

* Mood Board Presentations (3-5 minutes)
* How to use mood board as inspiration to create a clothing collection
* Q&A- preparing to design your collections

Homework: 1. Review all sample collections in course materials, think about how each mood board is represented in the final collection 2. Read Fashion Mini Collection Guidance Handout 3. Design your own collection using sample croquis from course materials. Make sure that your collection is fully rendered using markers and or color pencils. Outlined for clarity.

Week 3: 

* Final Presentations of Clothing Collections
* Wrap Up
* Q&A

My name is Khaaliqa Levy & I am a Fashion Designer, formally trained at Parsons in NYC.  I have over 15 years of experience across Sleepwear, Juniors, Intimates, Resort, Activewear & Swimwear. I have worked professionally in NYC for many corporate design companies, including: Victoria's Secret, Victoria's Secret PINK, Target, Hips & Curves, JC Penney, Adore Me, Calvin Klein Swim, Spanx, Anne Cole and others. I am also CEO & Creative Director of CURVYKINI (www.curvykini.com). CURVYKINI is trendy, luxury swimwear cut in sizes 10-24, launched in 2016.  I call myself a "momprenuer," as I'm also a SAHM of a 4 year old, a 3 year old & a 4 month old.   Fashion is my life, and I would love to share my knowledge and expertise with young, aspiring designers.  I teach fashion design classes which help prepare young students to be TRULY competitive in the fashion industry.
