Come along for a four-week journey as you learn multiple types of essay writing. Each week we will cover the basics, developing student's abilities to create four types of essays (Narrative, Persuasive, Descriptive, Expository) while promoting confidence through sharing and peer-reviewing/discussion. Lesson 1: Introduction to essay writing. This week will set the stage for the rest of the semester. For the first half of the class, you will learn about the BOW system (brainstorm, outline,...
During this course, you will learn how to create four types of essays: Persuasive, Narrative, Descriptive, Expository. To do this, you will be learning about how to brainstorm ideas, create an outline, and then put together a five-part essay. Each essay will include an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Writing is FUN, but I've seen too many students see it as a chore. However, writing is a skill that impacts a person's life long after school ends. Why not make it fun now? As for me, I love classic literature and I especially enjoy working with students to help them develop their own love of reading and writing. (So much so that I've made a career out of it!) While my English degree, TEFL, and TESOL certifications are important, I've learned more about creating a positive learning environment from my years as a homeschool mom and classical tutor.
Each week, you will be given an essay to write using the outlines created during (or following) class. I ask that all students submit their essays when completed (with at least 24-48 hours before the next live class meeting) via MS Word or Google Docs. The essays will not be graded, but I would like a copy before class in order to give constructive feedback to each student. All students will be asked to contribute in class and online. *Parents: You are always welcome to have your child submit his/her essay to me if you would like additional feedback after it has been revised based on class feedback. My main objective during this course is to build writing confidence and help your child understand processes that make writing essays easier regardless of the topic.
*Pen or pencil and notepad will be important for note-taking. While the materials about what we cover in class will be accessible to you after our meeting, you will want to have your own notes for your brainstorming ideas and outlines. *Access to Google Docs for resources.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Depending on how you break down the essay writing at home (completing it in one day or splitting it over multiple days) will determine how long you will need outside of class.
