Class Experience

What do block building, video games, board games, and STEM projects all have in common? You need good instructions in order to correctly create your project, pass a level, win the game, and allow you to have successful results with your experiments.

But who comes up with those instructions and how do they know that they work? In this class, you are going to pretend to write to someone who knows nothing about your subject. You will walk them through the steps, in an essay format, to teach them how to do the thing you love doing the most...whatever that is.

Join me for a four-day writing course that breaks down the steps to create an expository essay. Although there is a specific formula we will follow during each class, the content (WHAT you write) is up to you.

Breakdown of days:
Day 1: Intro. to the Expository Essay + Brainstorming
Day 2: Creating an Easy-to-Follow Outline: The Body Paragraphs
Day 3: Creating an Easy-to-Follow Outline: Introduction/Conclusion
Day 4: Transitioning from Outline to Writing

Learners will submit daily homework (don't worry...they're guided resources) to make sure that they are on the right path and to catch any errors before writing the final essay. After the last day of class, learners will complete their essay and send it in for feedback. Please note that the essays are not graded but are reviewed and feedback is given in a kind and supportive way.

Learning Goals

In this course, you will be learning about how to brainstorm ideas, create an outline, and then put together a five-part essay. Your expository essay will include an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

Writing is FUN, but I've seen too many students see it as a chore. However, writing is a skill that impacts a person's life long after school ends. Why not make it fun now?

As for me, I love classic literature and I especially enjoy working with students to help them develop their own love of reading and writing. (So much so that I've made a career out of it!) While my English degree, registration as an IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) Instructor, TEFL, and TESOL certifications are important, I've learned more about creating a positive learning environment from my years as a homeschool mom and online educator. Learners learn better when having fun!
