This is an introductory session to a critical thinking course that uses topics from world history and science to practice essential critical thinking skills. This course is perfect for middle-schoolers between ages of 12-15. The course will explore the importance of scale-shifting, claim-testing, adopting multiple perspectives, and the process by which knowledge is created and how it evolves over time. The class meets once a week for five weeks. Students do not really need any prior knowledge, but be curious about world history, science and critical thinking! Week 1: why do we look at things from far-away and close-up? Week 2: how and why do individuals change their minds? Week 3: how does looking at the same info from different perspectives pave the way for progress? Week 4: how and why do theories becomes generally accepted? Week 5: how and why do theories evolve? This is a great class that draws from history as well as science!
Learning Goals
Students will practice critical thinking skills used by historians and scientists to write and analyze historical and scientific knowledge.
