Learning computers is not as intimidating as you think. In this 6-session course, students will learn about computers, hardware, software, networks, telecommunications, internet, artificial intelligence, computer troubleshooting/maintenance, future of technology (robots), privacy and security. Categories of Computer and their functions 5. Computer Data -- Binary Codes 6. Types of Character Encoding 7. Computer Storage and Memory Measurements Session 2: Computer Hardware 1. Processor: CPU -- parts of CPU, CPU cycle, how a CPU is made (from sand to chip), performance of a CPU 2. Processor: GPU -- function 3. Motherboard -- CPU Socket, DRAM, ROM, ports and connectors, Chipsets, BIOS, CMOS, CMOS Battery, PCI-e 4. Inside a System Unit -- Computer System Unit -- Definition, Parts (A Look Inside the Unit), and Functions Session 3: Computer Hardware / Software 1. Input Devices and their uses 2. Output Devices and their uses 3. Storage Devices and their uses 4. Four categories of software 5. Application software -- Definition, examples, and functions of application software 6. Programming software / languages 7. Malware Session 4: Software / Internet 1. System software -- six categories (operating system, device drivers, etc.) 2. Definition, functions, and kinds of operating systems 3. Types of user interfaces and their differences 4. System utilities or utility software 5. Internet and WWW 6. URL (parts of URL), IP address, DNS 7. Types of internet connections Session 5: Networks 1. Computer Networks 2. Types of Networks 3. Network Topologies 4. Network Hardware: network cables, switches, routers, WiFi extenders, and modems 5. Firewalls Session 6: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Privacy and Security, Future of Computers/Technology 1. Definition of AI 2. AI levels – Narrow, general, super 3. Types of AI -- Artificial intelligence, Machine learning, Deep learning 4. Applications of AI 5. Fun activities with AI 6. Remote wiping, Encryption 7. Using Wi-FI (public and your own) 8. Types of Authentication 9. Futures of Computers/Technology Quizzes: Students will have weekly quizzes (starting with week 2) to test the knowledge gained from the course materials. So please review the content before taking each quiz.
