Strategy, patience, perseverance. These are just a handful of skills and virtues developed in students while learning one of the world’s most popular and oldest game. Students who study and participate in the game of chess engage in a process that helps develop decision making skills, logic, fair play, and competitiveness. This introductory three lesson course was created for a chess course for younger players. The course will introduce students to the basic rules of play and opening game strategies, all while experiencing one-one game play. Students will meet once a week for three weeks. A chess set is not required for the course but is recommended for practice. Students should also plan on keeping a notebook for lesson notes. While there is no homework assigned for the course, students are encouraged to engage in matches as often as possible between lessons.
