In this class on Canadian government we will be learning about types of government around the world, the purpose of government in Canada, Canada as a monarchy and levels of government in Canada. This class will be a lecture style but will include some videos and discussion to get students thinking. We will cover local, provincial and federal government. At the end of this class students will be able to understand how Canada's government fits into the world, why we have a government, how Canada's democratic system works plus what an election is, what role Britain has with Canada, how do government decisions affect people in a country and what different levels of government (municipal, provincial, federal) are responsible for. Before class starts students will be given handouts that they can bring to class to fill in if they wish. The five classes will be as follows: Types of Government Around The World Purpose of Government in Canada Canada as a Monarchy What Is An Election? Levels of Government in Canada *This is listing is very similar to the version of the class for youger students. The class for older students will be more in depth and will have more discussions at further length than the class for younger students. *Please note that depending on the amount of students and discussion we may end class 5 mins earlier than stated. *Please be mindful that in our “Types of Government” class we will be going over categories of governments and naming countries that use these types of government. There will also be pictures of some leaders that run these types of government. Some aspects of these individuals may be controversial or upsetting to certain learners. We will NOT be speaking about these individuals themselves, only using them as an example of different countries. For example, when speaking about Dictatorship there will be an image of Stalin and names of two other dictatorship leaders (Kim Jong-un and Bashar al-Assad). Those are only there for examples of students to put a name to the type of government. This class will be neutral and exists to examine all types of government before learning about Canada's government. Other types of government that will be mentioned and may be sensitive for some students are Authoritarianism, Totalitarianism and Communism. If students have more questions about the leaders or types of government they will be directed to do research with their grown up. In this class I will not be discussing how any type of government stacks up to another. This section is purely for facts.
