Class Experience

Anxious about math? You're not alone. Math is a subject that brings up dread in even the most intelligent, diligent students of all ages. It can be especially frustrating when math is required for graduation, for a prerequisite for another class (i.e., science or computers), or for an entrance examination to middle school or a summer program. Math anxiety can be especially challenging during current times, with the addition of the stress of moving your learning from a traditional classroom to online.

But did you know that math anxiety goes deeper than understanding your current math material (or any previous math material that you may have missed)? As an experienced educator since 2006 and certified life coach since 2014, I have found that math anxiety is much more about mastering your mindset than about studying the material. In this one-hour introduction course, we will learn the basics of mastering your mindset about math, and how to gain control of your negative thoughts and feelings about math before they sabotage you.

Although I will be giving some basic information in lecture format (i.e., the brain science behind math anxiety, how thoughts affect feelings, etc.), there will be plenty of time for interaction. This includes, but is not limited to, sharing stories and asking questions.

Because this course does not directly address the math material, this course is appropriate for learners regardless of what level math class they are currently enrolled in, or even if they are currently not taking a formal math class.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about the importance of mindset, the importance of goal-setting in math, the parts of the brain responsible for math anxiety, and practical tips like brainstorming and breathing exercises. We will then leave time for discussion and Q and A, and will address individual concerns as appropriate.
