Class Experience

My Imaginary World Building workshops are a hit with students due to the quick manner in which students engage in the creative process. In this hour long introduction to world-building, I will deliver hands-on experience through creative exercises that guide students to create a world of their own from scratch. As well, there are endless ways to develop these worlds after the workshop is over.

I also offers a 5-day (week-long) Building Imaginary Worlds class if your student's interest is piqued. The first class of that series is similar to this Intro, so the student could start another world or continue on the world already created in the Intro.

No prior background knowledge is necessary, just a willingness to dive right into the creative process.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basics of world-building and some geologic terminology.

Students should be prepared with blank sheets of paper (legal or larger is better, but regular letter size works just fine), a pencil, eraser, and a set of colored pencils.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching world-building for twenty-five years for schools, libraries, conferences, and festivals across North America. My fantasy adventure series Faerie Tales from the White Forest takes place in a completely imaginary world, so writing the series honed my world-building skills over time. While on book tours, most of the schools I visited could only manage 60-90 minute workshops within their schedules, so I developed a way to move quickly through the world-building process in a manner that is almost magical and certainly inspiring. The students have autonomy over their worlds, which makes the process ultimately satisfying.
