Class Experience

Learners will learn through instruction and modeling by the teacher, followed by individual and interactive practice. Emphasis will be placed on using Portuguese in conversational settings and understanding basic spoken and written Portuguese vocabulary. This is a beginner level, introductory course. Approximately 25-30 minutes will be instructional time and 25-30 minutes will involve practice for each class period. Learners will participate via repeating vocabulary and phrases, by creating dialogues with learned vocabulary, and by present dialogues in class. It is important that learners have either a headset or a quiet enough background environment that they will be able to pay attention closely to pronunciation.

Class 1: Introductions, Greetings & Leave Takings
Class 2: Polite Expressions, Survival Vocabulary, & Pronunciation Tips
Class 3: Talking About Family
Class 4: Food - Eating Out or Eating In

As this is an introductory language course, no required experience or knowledge in Portuguese is necessary. Of course, if the learner has background knowledge in learning a foreign language (especially any of the Romance languages) or in Portuguese, that would be a great platform from which to expand.

Portuguese is my second language of 20+ years. I have a love for the language, culture, and people of Brazil, and I love to share that knowledge, enthusiasm, and passion with my learners. Furthermore, because of my professional background in studying phonology and linguistics in teaching English as a second language, I have a unique perspective and understanding on how to teach and learn language. Plus, I find language and culture learning fun!
