Class Experience

Bees and other insects play an important role in our ecosystem, pollinating flowers that become food for both animals and humans!  The honey bee has a sweet bonus, HONEY!  Who doesn't love a spoonful of honey?  Join us in this 4-week FLEX course as we explore an apiary, learn about beekeeping, and interview a bee keeper!  Learn the parts of the commercial hive and equipment needed for beekeeping, as well as different types of bees, and some problems bee keepers face and mitigate.

Students will be able to identify various hive parts and bee keeping equipment.
Students will be able to identify pros and cons of different bee breeds.
Students will be able to identify pests and diseases commonly afflicting honeybees and discuss mitigation.

Week 1 - Commercial Hives and Equipment - Shopping List Assignment
Week 2 - Bee Breeds - Essay
Week 3 - Pests and Disease - Essay
Week 4 - Honey Extraction - Honey Sales Assignment

Pencil/paper for note taking may be beneficial.  Handouts will be provided.
