In this semester long, 18 week course, students will explore animal science through animal genetics and reproduction in beef cattle and horses.
Class experience
In this class students will be introduced to animal science and the many components that go along with it; topics will include animal breed identification, identification and selection of breeding and replacement animals for herd development, Horse genetics, beef genetics, nutrition and feeding, poultry science, pet and companion animal purposes including breeds, nutrition, reproductive management, sustainable animal agriculture, careers in animal science and food safety. I am a former middle school - high school agricultural education teacher where I taught specialty classes including introduction to agriculture, veterinary science, introduction to animal science, plant science, greenhouse, agriscience 1 and agriscience 2 as well as welding fabrication, various welding classes, career technical education, physical education and earth science for 6 years. I also served as an adjunct professor to our local junior college as a welding professor. I am a life long agriculturalist, having been involved in the cattle and horse industry for my entire life, and serving multiple roles in the industry from National Ambassador to Producer - my current role, I have assisted in veterinary care for multiple vets, helping with surgeries, ultrasounds of both horses and cattle, various forms of testing for pathogens, and more . I live and work on a working cattle ranch with my family, where I homeschool my four children who range in ages from 6-13. I also am the president of our local homeschool co-op and director of our county science fair board.
notebook and supplied worksheets/documents/printables are all that will be needed for this class. Occassionally we may do a project, students will be notified in advance what will be needed for the next classes, items will be things commonly found in the home.

material for the class comes from Introduction to Animal Science, 4th edition by W. Stephen Damron as well as personal knowledge and experience. Students will be provided with excerpts of the book/graphs/etc. as needed throughout the course. Purchase of the book is suggested but not required.
