Description
Class Experience
How I View Ancient History The study of ancient history organically blends aspects of storytelling with geography, archaeology, religion, and psychology. With often incomplete primary sources available to us, and needing to sift through the author's bias of the ones we do have, studying ancient history absolutely requires a combination of disciplines to come alive accurately and well. In my approach to history, the people's stories remain the bottom line. The humans of history are the focus....
I have both a BA and MA in the field of Classical Studies, and over a decade of teaching experience adapting this content for students. While my style is not to avoid tough discussions or the more brutal parts of history, I do try to include them as they are relevant and not just for a gross-out or shock factor (the only exception to this might be the inclusion of details about Roman sanitation, which do factor into these classes sometimes and can be gross!). These details remain part of the story, and deserve representation in the historical narrative.
Readings and discussion questions should be completed before each class; optional presentations will be on uniquely assigned days so they fit into our flow of lessons.
I have compiled primary source materials (all public domain and available for free online) specifically for this course. This is included in the price of the class and will be available for you to access/download in our Classroom the day before our class begins.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I am happy to provide opportunities for formal assessment upon request!
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
Some facets of ancient history are brutal. Wars, gladiator contests, volcanic eruptions that destroy entire cities, and violent myths will factor into our readings and discussions. Additionally, our discussions will broach the topics of ancient religions as they factored importantly in the development of Roman history and culture. The three religions most prevalent in the ancient Roman world were Roman paganism, Judaism, and (later on) Christianity. Visuals from the archaeological remains of Pompeii (body casts) may be disturbing for some students. Please reach out if you have any concerns or questions.
We will discuss several primary source excerpts throughout the class. I have compiled these sources and will make them available for learners to download the day before our class begins. This booklet of source materials is included in the price of the course.
