In this one time class, I will introduce a Deaf Culture art form: ABC Stories. We will view examples from Deaf performers available on YouTube (the playlist will be available in the class page) and learn the ASL ABC handshapes which are used in the stories. Students will engage in peer-ed discussion, lecture, and video examples from YouTube. We will create our own class story as a group. No prior knowledge of ASL is required, but it is helpful to know the fingerspelling alphabet prior to the...
Students will learn the American Sign Language Alphabet Handshapes (one element of ASL Phonology) Students will gain an understanding of how the language uses handshapes and movement to create and play with the language (much like Hearing culture uses songs, chants, and nonsense sounds). Students will collaborate to create a unique class story that uses these elements of ASL.
I have been a teacher for eight years and hold a Bachelor's Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) and have used the language and been involved with the Deaf Community since I was 7 years old.
Homework will be to watch at least one more example of the art form (a YouTube playlist will be available) and submit a completed form with 3 required questions based on what they have watched and what they learned in class. The Assignment document will be available through the classroom page.
2 files available upon enrollmentA one page handout with the ASL ABC handshapes will be provided, but more useful will be a video showing how the alphabet is produced. The video will clarify elements that are hard to see in a photograph. It will be extremely helpful to watch and practice the alphabet prior to class.
An assessment will be submitted for each learner who completes the homework assignment.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
We will be watching a video that mentions the events of the sinking of the Titanic, this may be a sensitive topic for some students. If parents have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me.
A YouTube playlist of ABC Stories will be made available as well as a written homework assignment.
