Class Experience

Students will learn about the basic idea of psychology through an interactive session. The session will include a movie reference, storytelling and a case study.

The video based session will be used to create a classroom-like environment.

In this one-time 60 minute session, the following breakdown will be used a guide:
1) Asking how psychology is understood. This is a good way to break the ice and also understand presuppositions
2) Explaining what psychology is. I will be using the following definition 'psychology is a subject attempting to understand humans.' The definition will be followed by a discussion entailing what it means to understand humans and how we actually do it every day without knowing
3) Laying the foundation, now I will be talking about why psychology is not just common sense but actually a scientific study. I believe it is important to explain what research is here. There will be a Research Task where students can do their own research work and see how they can also observe human behavior. The task will be explained in detail using storytelling and the document handed will entail detailed instructions as well. Going to get their little observer interest going!
4) Case study. A prerequisite for this course is awareness of the movie 'Home Alone' (Original, 1990). The movie will be used to understand how and why different characters behave the way they do and then connect the analysis and different scenes to psychology
5) Learning a new technique. I believe that psychology is not taught well, unless there is a technique/method that one can learn to use in everyday life. I will be teaching a technique that will help students in learning and memorizing

Learning Goals

Students will learn what psychology has to offer as a subject. This is a brief introduction where they will also understand how psychology surrounds us.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone. I joined Outschool back in 2019 and then stepped away to go back to school. I am now in my third year of PhD in the department of elementary education. I emphasize hands-on and child-centered approaches.
My focus is on balancing curricular needs with development of 21st century skills (e.g., problem-solving, critical thinking, collaboration and creativity) because we don't just want children to memorize academic content. We want them to be able to think in ways that allows them to construct their own understanding and apply their knowledge, across situations.
I believe that children learn by asking questions and experimenting and wondering. I feel that asking questions is a big part of my work with children, and so you will always hear me asking your children questions. And it always amazes me how they explain their viewpoint, their understanding and their thinking.
I hope to work alongside your children in their learning journey and spark an enthusiasm for learning new things.
