Class Experience

Beginner - Intermediate Level
In this class we will begin to explore topics in zoo animal veterinary science and zoology. Each lesson has a recorded lesson along with some additional, carefully selected videos. Optional project ideas are available and the teacher will be happy to give feedback on the assignments, however no grades will be provided.

This class does not require any prerequisite learning. This course content is also different from any of my other veterinary courses so please join in even if you have previously taken any classes with me!

Lesson 1:
Careers with zoo animals
 Careers with Zoo Animals - Why are these professions so important? 
1 assignment
Lesson 2:
How do they know if that animal is sick or injured?
 How do they know if a zoo animal is sick or injured? How does a vet get close enough to a wild animal to be able to tell? 
1 assignment
Lesson 3:
Physical exams and diagnostic testing
 Physical exams and diagnostic testing - How are vets able to perform physical exams and collect samples such as blood for testing on these types of animals? Behavioral training that allows zookeepers and vets to get close enough to conduct these important tests will be discussed. 
2 assignments
Lesson 4:
Surgery on zoo and conservation site animals
 Surgery on zoo animals - How do vets get zoo animals under anesthesia and into surgery? How are these animals recovered after surgery? 
1 assignment

I have been a certified veterinary technician for more than 30 years, have a MEd from Colorado State University and a Master of Veterinary Education (MVEd) from Lincoln Memorial University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.  

I have been teaching  at local community colleges in veterinary Assistant Programs and a variety of Veterinary Science programs for grades 3-5, 6-8, and high school in person. Prior to teaching I was in management at one of the largest veterinary practices in my state.  

 I am a member of the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America, the Association of Zoo Veterinary Technicians and the American Association of Equine Technicians and Assistants. I am a lifelong learner myself and love sharing my excitement for learning! 

I am also a homeschool mom! At home, my family has 2 mini horses, a Paint horse,  4 Nigerian dwarf goats, 6 chickens and 4 cats!

 I  am passionate about sharing my experience and love for animals and veterinary medicine with all learners from diverse backgrounds from all around the world! If your learner has a dream to be a veterinary professional, then I am excited to help them on these first steps!
