Class Experience

Students will learn the basics of playing the violin such as bow hold, instrument position, tone, posture, and performance.  By the end of the course Students will be able to perform 3 rhythmic  variations of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and will have the necessary groundwork to continue learning beyond class.

This class is intended for students who have never played violin.  An instrument, shoulder rest, bow and art tapes will be needed.  Students will be expected to practice their new material between classes so that they are ready to move on to the next learning point.  Class is set at a standard pace.  Students requiring extra support are welcome to have a parent as a learning coach.

Students will need to practice every day in order to get the most out of this class. When it comes to learning the violin, frequency is better than duration, in other words, playing for 5 minutes each day is better than play for 30 minutes every 3 days.

Non-verbal, RPM/letter-board students and any other special needs students welcome.  

The price of this class is intentionally kept low to make it easier for parents to invest in a quality instrument and shoulder rest.

Parental Guidance

All content is appropriate for primary school students. Parents are welcome to observe class and provide motor assistance as needed. I respectfully request that questions asked only by students during class time. Parents are encourage to email me their own questions directly.

A playable violin with bow (Shar Music online sells and rents instruments)
Kun style shoulder rest (Available on amazon or Shar)
Art tapes (for marking the finger position on the violin)
A tuner or tuning app (I like Pro Guitar Tuner Lite available in App store or Play store)

Teacher expertise and credentials

2022 marks my 30th year teaching music!  I have taught violin, viola, cello, piano, and guitar to students all over the world, in my studio, and through the webcam.  I specialize in working with students with special needs– including, but not limited to, ADHD and non-speaking Autism.  I love music and believe every human should have access to learning an instrument.  My approach speaks to all kinds of learners, from serious to recreational.  I am happy to assist advanced students in preparing for college auditions or to simply increase their musical knowledge.

I am also a composer, a filmmaker, and a photographer.  Over the years, I have enjoyed creating short films that show the power in being different.  These film projects have given me the opportunity to combine all of my artistic passions. I am honoured to have been the film score composer for the movie LISTEN, which recently won the Zukor Award at the 2021 Astor Film Festival.

My early experiences began with dancing on stage, and that has taken me on an exciting journey through stage performance, improv, film acting, and even live band performances for thousands of people.  I have played with symphony orchestras, both semi-pro and community, seated as concertmaster, principal chair, and as the conductor.
