In this 4-week course, students will learn the basics of music theory and ukulele technique, and will have the student strumming both standard songs and today’s pop hits by the end of the month.

Class Experience

Broaden your child’s musical horizons with a beginner ukulele class in the year of 2021!  Classes cover the basics of music theory and ukulele technique, and will have your student strumming both standard songs and today’s pop hits by the end of the month.

Ukulele: Let's learn to play the very first C chord! 
Theory: Learn about measures and time signatures. 

10/6
Ukulele: Learn to play the F chord, practice mixing chords 
Theory: Learn about whole, half, and quarter rests.  

10/13
Ukulele: Learn G7 chord, practice 3-chord progression with C, F, and G7, learn Skip to My Lou 
Theory: Learn about whole, half, and quarter notes. 
Take requests for Week 4

10/20
Ukulele: Learn Am chord, learn requested songs with simple chords. Learn Shake It Off by Taylor Swift or other 3-chord songs 
Theory: Learn to play in 3/4 and 2/4.

* Ukulele needs to be tuned before each class.

Class curriculum is based on the Mel Bay Children’s Ukulele Method Book (https://www.amazon.com/dp/0786690364/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_m2IbFb2YPJE6B). We will provide lesson materials for each class we cover, but it’s a useful resource for students, so they might want to buy a copy for themselves.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Charissa Hoffman is both the youngest and the first female ukulele principal at Berklee College of Music. She has been featured in publications such as Ukulele Magazine, and has performed in venues across the U.S., ranging from the Bluebird Café to Freshgrass Festival, and alongside artists like Phil Keaggy.
