Class Experience

This is a high-energy, highly interactive class that caters to the levels of all students. No experience in performing, theater, comedy, or improv required! More than anything, this is a space for everyone to be silly, connect with peers, and have fun. This class is flexible to the various abilities and ranges of motion of our students.

We will begin by learning names and then playing warm-up games to get our energy up, and we'll use our bodies to move around. Next, we'll work on creating "group mind," where we react and respond to one another, to practice awareness of our new teammates! Throughout the class, I'll be playing together with the students to model certain principles and practices, and giving them opportunities to perform as much as they feel comfortable.

After exploring both the limitations and the affordances of our Zoom boxes, we'll use them as our virtual 'stage' to do character walks, where we move as different kinds of characters. We'll talk about and try different postures, voices, and facial expressions to relay information about who our characters are, and take suggestions to build new characters. Then, we'll learn about how to build a scene with characters and relationships between them, where we determine what the scene's objective is. This is where we get to do a lot of playing and experimenting. We also build in time to reflect on how a scene went, and what we could try the next time.

By the end of the class, my hope is that students feel more comfortable and confident in their silliness, and can harness it into these fundamental performing principles. Each student will get personalized, supportive encouragement throughout class!
Learning Goals

-Treat virtual spaces as a 'stage'
-Say "Yes, And..." to offers and gifts from fellow players
-Use body posture, voices, and facial expressions to convey characters
-Discover new characters within ourselves, and gift characters to teammates
-Find the 'CROW' in a scene (Character, Relationships, Objective, Where)

Hi! I'm Soleil (so-LAY) and I teach a variety of classes here at Outschool, from engineering and coding, to improv and performing basics. I have so many different passions, and love showing kids that they can explore multiple interests, too.

I have been a teacher in various formal and informal roles for several years now, and hold a Master's degree in Learning, Developmental, and Family Sciences with an Early Childhood emphasis. I'm a state certified teacher for birth-6th grade, but I love working with people of all ages!

My classes are student-led and inquiry-driven, and no two are the same for that very reason. I believe in following children, and see myself as a collaborator who scaffolds thinking, not as a directive leader. Any time I can give my students a voice and a chance to lead, I do! I follow Reggio-inspired principles and believe in connecting first and foremost with my students, as well as giving them the opportunity to connect with each other.

I love inspiring new ideas and ways of thinking, and feel so much joy in seeing children grow as makers, thinkers, performers, and creators. I can't wait to see you in class!
