Graphic novels for kids are huge right now! One only has to visit a school book fair or language arts classroom to see their impact. But are they real literature? And what can students learn from them?

Graphic novels are a great way to reach even the most reluctant reader, and many graphic novels have been recognized with awards like the Eisner Award and the Newberry Honor Award. Scholastic and other trusted names in children's publishing have been putting out graphic novels in recent years that share the same complexity as traditional print novels, and teachers have been using these graphic novels in classrooms across the country to teach literary concepts and to grow a love of reading in their students.

This class offers an introduction to this form of storytelling, including a brief history of comics, the anatomy of a graphic novel, and a discussion of the literary components of the story "The InvestiGators Book 1" by John Patrick Green.
**Students will need to have read the book before attending the class. The book can be checked out at the library (physically or digitally - try Libby!), bought new or used on Amazon, or picked up at your local bookstore or comic shop. I recommend buying used. Think of it as recycling!
