Beginner Level
This course is taught by national and world-champion debaters and will guide learners through beginner public speaking in prepared and impromptu speaking exercises as well as dive into debate. Learners will walk away with confidence in writing and delivering prepared speeches, strategies to create a speech without time to prepare, and knowledge and experience in argument construction and refutation. The first 3 weeks of class will focus on how to write and present a speech. We will cover the types of speeches, how to format a speech, how to write conversationally, and how to present a speech. Learners will be given many opportunities to practice impromptu speaking along the way. In the 3rd week, learners will present their prepared speech to the class. Then we will move to debate where we will cover the history of debate, terminology, formats, case-writing, rebuttals, ethos/pathos/logos and much more! Each class will include instruction and opportunities to practice public speaking and debating while building skills and cases for the final debates. This class structure may vary depending on how quickly learners are moving forward. We will slow down or speed up the course to accommodate them and ensure it’s a positive and productive learning environment! Please note that weekly payments are not accepted for this class since learners will be placed on teams during the debate portion. Therefore it's important to guarantee that their teammate will be in class throughout the whole course.
